Dr. Elissa Santoro, MD is a recipient of Preferred Health Magazine's prestigious Doctors of Distinction Award, honoring her pioneering contributions to breast cancer surgery, exceptional clinical leadership, and unwavering commitment to advancing compassionate,
patient-centered care for women.

For more than 55 years, Dr. Elissa Santoro, MD, dedicated her life to advancing breast cancer care, mentoring future physicians, and redefining the physician-patient relationship through compassion and holistic healing. An award-winning oncologist and breast cancer specialist, Dr. Santoro built a legacy as one of the most influential pioneers in breast oncology and women's health.
A true trailblazer, Dr. Santoro became the first physician in New Jersey to specialize in oncology and breast health, helping shape the future of breast cancer treatment across the state. She also broke barriers as the first woman surgeon at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City and later became its first female chief surgical resident—historic achievements that opened doors for generations of women physicians to follow.
Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Santoro spent 47 years caring for breast cancer patients at RWJ Barnabas Health in Livingston, New Jersey. After retiring from clinical practice in October 2025 following an extraordinary 55 years in medicine, she briefly served as a high-risk patient consultant at Montclair Breast Center at the invitation of one of the first women surgeons she had mentored. Today, Dr. Santoro is fully retired and enjoys spending time with her family.
Reflecting on the evolution of breast cancer care,
Dr. Santoro credits technological innovation with transforming patient outcomes.
“The most transformative breakthroughs for patients and the physician-patient relationship, alongside medical innovations, have been 3D mammography, breast ultrasound for dense breasts, and MRI of the breast, which can detect precancers and early breast cancers, leading to cures,” she said.
While advances in imaging have revolutionized early detection, Dr. Santoro believes the greatest progress in medicine extends beyond technology alone.
“The physician-patient relationship evolved into mind, body, and spirit care, which improved quality of life and encouraged the lifestyle changes needed for holistic healing,” she explained. Long before women in surgery became commonplace, Dr. Santoro faced the challenge of demonstrating the unique strengths women bring to medicine.
“My greatest challenge was demonstrating the powerful role a woman surgeon could have through a woman's maternal approach to exhibiting empathy and compassion to her patients,” she shared.
One of Dr. Santoro's proudest accomplishments has been mentoring future generations of women surgeons and oncologists. “I was able to train other women surgeons in oncology fellowships and inspire them to continue my philosophy of whole-patient care. They became my ‘daughters,’” she said.
Dr. Santoro's passion for medicine began early. In 1965, she graduated from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania while simultaneously completing a surgical internship, demonstrating the determination and discipline that would define her remarkable career. She later completed her surgical residency at St. Vincent's Hospital and earned an ACS Postdoctoral Cancer Training Fellowship. Further advancing her expertise, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer training through the National Institutes of Health at New York Medical College, where she also served on the faculty. She remains board-certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
Throughout her career, Dr. Santoro remained deeply involved in leading medical organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Medical Society of New Jersey, and the American Cancer Society. Reflecting her leadership and dedication, she became the first woman president of the North Jersey division of the American Cancer Society.
Among her many honors, Dr. Santoro was named a New Jersey Top Doc and became the first recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Woman recognition in medicine, now known as the Christine Todd Whitman Award. She received the Empowered Women in Medicine Award from Preferred Professionals Network in 2024 and was featured on the Patient Preferred Presents Podcast in 2023. Recognized as a Top Breast Oncology Specialist, she was highlighted in Preferred Health Magazine's Best in Medicine issue in 2019.
