Your career in pediatric dentistry blends clinical care, teaching, and community outreach. What inspired you to pursue such a multifaceted path?
My passion for pediatric dentistry stems from a deep commitment to improving children's oral health and their overall well-being. I believe that providing comprehensive care involves much more than just clinical expertise—
it requires building lasting relationships based on trust and understanding with both the children and their parents.
This multifaceted path was inspired by my desire to make a positive, long-term impact. Clinical care allows me to address immediate dental needs, but equally important is my role in educating families and fostering a supportive environment. To build trust, I prioritize open communication, explaining procedures in an age-appropriate manner and listening carefully to parents’ concerns. I believe that transparency and honesty are key to establishing confidence—they help families feel assured that their child's health is in caring hands.
Creating a warm, welcoming environment helps children feel comfortable and safe during visits, which is essential for positive experiences. I also strive to be consistent and reliable in my care, as continuity reassures families that I am dedicated to their child's ongoing health.
Ultimately, my goal is to create relationships rooted in respect, empathy, and trust, encouraging families to continue their care with me even after they move away or if life circumstances change. Such trust is the foundation for delivering effective, compassionate care and fostering a lifelong positive attitude towards oral health.

Many of your patients continue to see you even after moving away for college or work. What do you think helps you build such lasting trust with families?
Creating lasting trust with families is central to my practice. Here’s how I achieve that:
1. Personalized Care: I strive to understand each child's unique needs and preferences,
providing treatment plans tailored specifically to them. This personal touch helps families feel heard and valued.
2. Open Communication: I maintain honest and open communication with both children and their parents. Explaining procedures in an understandable way builds confidence and demystifies dental care.
3. Comforting Environment: I focus on creating a welcoming and stress-free atmosphere. By prioritizing patient comfort, I help children associate dental visits with positive experiences.
4. Consistent Follow-Up: Regular follow-ups and check-ins foster continuity of care, assuring families that they have ongoing support and guidance.
5. Long-Term Relationships: Building relationships based on mutual respect and understanding
encourages families to return, as they know their child’s well-being is genuinely prioritized.
These elements collectively build a foundation of trust and loyalty, encouraging families to continue their care with me, even from afar.
Your academic background includes a degree in psychology.
How has that training influenced the way you approach pediatric dentistry and patient care?
My academic background in psychology has significantly enriched my approach to pediatric dentistry and patient care in several ways:
1. Understanding Child Development: Knowledge of psychological principles allows me to better comprehend children's emotional and cognitive development stages, enabling me to tailor my communication and approach to each child's level of understanding and comfort.
2. Building Trust and Rapport: Psychology has equipped me with skills to establish a strong rapport with young patients, making them feel safe and respected. This trust is crucial for cooperation and positive dental experiences.
3. Behavior Management: I use techniques rooted in psychology to gently guide children through procedures, reducing anxiety and resistance. This collaborative approach often results in more efficient treatments and happier patients.
4. Empathy and Communication: A psychology background fosters greater empathy, helping me listen actively to both children and parents, addressing their concerns effectively and fostering an environment of openness.
5. Family Dynamics: Understanding family and social influences allows me to provide more holistic care, considering factors that might affect a child's oral health and their attitude toward dental visits.
Overall, this training has helped me deliver compassionate, individualized care that addresses not just the dental issue, but also the emotional and psychological well-being of my young patients.
Through Nosara Sonrie, you provide care to nearly 2,000 children annually in Costa Rica. How has this global outreach shaped your perspective on dentistry?
My experience with Nosara Sonrie has profoundly shaped my perspective on dentistry by broadening my understanding of the global disparities in oral health and the transformative power of accessible care. Working with children in Costa Rica has taught me the following:
1. Importance of Accessibility: It reinforced the idea that quality dental care should be a right, not a privilege. Providing services to nearly 2,000 children annually highlights the tremendous impact that outreach and community programs can have on underserved populations.
2. Cultural Sensitivity: Engaging with diverse communities has deepened my appreciation for cultural differences and the importance of adapting care and communication styles to meet varied needs effectively.
3. Resilience and Gratitude: Witnessing the resilience of children in challenging circumstances has been inspiring and has strengthened my commitment to serving vulnerable populations with compassion and dedication.
4. Global Perspective: This experience has underscored the interconnectedness of oral health issues worldwide and the importance of collaborative efforts to improve children’s health globally.
5. Innovation and Flexibility: Working in varied settings has fostered adaptability, encouraging me to develop creative solutions for overcoming barriers—be it resource limitations or cultural differences.
Overall, this global outreach has reinforced my belief that dentistry can be a powerful tool for social change and personal growth, inspiring me to continue making a meaningful difference in children’s lives—locally and globally.
Looking ahead, you’ve spoken about transforming dentistry into a more patient-focused field. What changes do you hope to see in pediatric dentistry over the next decade?
Looking ahead, I am eager to see pediatric dentistry continue to embrace technological innovations that enhance early diagnosis and proactive treatment of dental caries. Advancements such as digital imaging, laser fluorescence, and AI-driven risk assessments will enable us to detect caries at their earliest, microscopic stages, allowing for preventive measures before significant decay occurs.
One particularly exciting development is Guided Enamel Repair (GER) utilizing Vardis' Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus. This minimally invasive approach leverages bioactive compounds to facilitate natural enamel remineralization, guiding the repair process at a cellular level. It allows us to treat early lesions without drilling, preserving healthy tooth structure and reducing patient discomfort—especially important in pediatric care. The simplicity and effectiveness of this technique make it suitable for young patients and capable of preventing lesion progression at its very inception.
I envision a future where technology enables us to not only identify early caries more accurately but also to intervene proactively with biologically based treatments like Curodont. This shift toward early, minimally invasive management will promote healthier smiles, encourage positive dental experiences, and foster long-term oral health habits. By combining cutting-edge diagnostics with innovative repair techniques, pediatric dentistry can truly become a field that emphasizes prevention and personalized, patient-centered care.
